As an atheist, I have been told more than once that we have no morals and no goodness. That Atheists just got no heart.
Why? One cannot have morals or goodness without having a fear of God. Or at least that is how I understand this Christian based reasoning, though it makes no sense to me.
I can only be good based only if I fear eternal punishment. What is wrong with this picture?
Atheists, humanists, skeptics, freethinkers and other who are “unlabeled” a-theist or a-religious are, in fact, very generous, but that is rarely seen. Why? The atheist community does not have something equivalent to the Salvation Army or Catholic Charities.
Yes, the American Humanists Association, Beyond Belief, and American Atheists have donation sites, but they are well-kept secrets. A-theists give directly to the Red Cross and other secular organizations. But there is a new organization in town.
My friends Amanda and Adam Brown saw a need and opened the doors of Atheists Give Aid just after the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings. Its purpose was to collect funding to be distributed to secular organizations providing aid and directly to the families who are not supported by religious institutions.
Since, then Atheists Giving Aid has raised money for the victims of the West, TX chemical explosion and for the Boston Marathon bombing victims. Their current focus is for the tornado victims in Moore, Texas.
100-percent of the donated proceeds to AGA have been or is scheduled to be funneled to the secular relief organizations or directly to those who need. Their operating fund comes from selling the really cool “We Are Atheists” merchandise available on their site, helping Amanda pay for the website and travel to various conferences across the U.S.
AGA has recently applied for their 501(c)(3) tax exempt status so soon your donations will be tax deductible, unlike some other crowd funding/donation sites.
Today AGA is focusing on one disaster at a time instead of stockpiling funds for the current and future needs. This may or may not be a good non-profit business model, but for the time being is it working.
They also do not have a “poster child,” that picture of someone, that little boy with the big eyes in torn and dirty clothes, who can pull heart and purse strings.
I like Amanda and Adam. They are well known among American atheists, humanists and skeptic, and are heavily involved with other major atheist movements as well as the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I truly believe that promising to distribute moneys to all those in need, not just one brave woman, is the better idea.
I strongly urge you to visit Atheists Giving Aid and sign-up for a continuing donation, like maybe $1,000,000 a month? And while you are there, buy a tee shirt or five so Amanda can continue to do the great work for which she is known.
Donate and his holy Nobleness appendage will touch with you with his marinara sauce. RAmen.
