Hell Hath Frozen Over!

Has it finally happened?

Tuesday’s ABC News headline read, “Republicans Supporting Gay Marriage Write Supreme Court Amicus Brief.”

I never thought I would see the day when Republican, Gay Marriage and Support were in the same sentence – EVER.

I conducted a GoodSearch.com search (always supporting my favorite charities) and found the same story headers in the NY Post, Newsday, MSNBC, CNN, Associated Press, Washington Post and other honored news outlets. It all began with a story in the New York Times. (Great arguments in the video, for those who do not like to read.)

Is it a GOP scam to gain LGBT voters for the 2014 mid-term and 2016 general elections? That is the position supported in liberal and conservative posts alike. But I give these men and women of the GOP the benefit of doubt and say, “You know, they may really think this way and are brave enough to separate themselves from the herd of blinded Wildebeests.”

Should opponents to DOMA look this gift horse in the mouth? Hell no. Take the support wherever you can get it, even if you believe it is for the wrong reason.

It is the extreme opponents of marriage, those of the religious-right and their more radical cousins, the right-wing right-wingers, who tend to deal with disagreements with anger, name calling and threats. Examples abound, but some of the best can be found in an essay at Little Green Footballs.  One quoted hate email that made me laugh.

“If gay marriage was about who you love, gay would be synonymous with ‘homoLOVEuality,’ not ‘homoSEXuality”.  It’s about men having sex with men.

It was not the sheer stupidity of the statement that caused me the giggles. No, it was the writer’s obvious misunderstanding of the English language, science and his (or her) obvious acceptance of women having sex with other women. Do I have a web site for them.

Hate seems to be the 2013 trend of the season. This morning’s Today Show, the “Take 3” segment talked about the Anne Hathaway and the Hathahaters. No, she does not have a new band. It refers to those “snarky” people sending hate tweets to Hathaway at a rate of nearly 25,000 per hour, because they 1) have nothing better to do with their lives, 2) want to cut down anything positive 3) just found out that her brother is gay or 4) (and this is only my opinion) have a collective IQ of 5… maybe 6.

And hate is not limited to DOMA opponents. Federal officials who support any form of “gun control” law are not immune to these hateful threats. On February 13, Colorado state Rep. Rhonda Fields (D) received the following threat from Franklin Sain for support tighter gun control laws in the state:

“I guarantee there is not enough law enforcement or military to stop an all-out overthrow of this government if you or that nigger president tries to take our guns. Guarantee we will make World War I and II look like child’s play, many will die. Be prepared.” (I can write the “N-word” because it is my blog and I am quoting an idiot.)

The disease of Hate has also affected legislators working under the various federal and state capital domes across the country. Plus Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee and Virginia, who have all rejected that Muslim inspired cap on their buildings.

I have also heard many a tea partier and religious-right extremist members of the federal and state congresses tell us they are “good Christians,” yet they routinely violate their biblical rules.

Is Hate what we are teaching as morals today? Did Mr. Sain and others of his ilk forget Luke 6:29 and Matthew 5:39, that if “someone strikes you on the cheek, offer him the other one as well.” Or Leviticus 19:18 “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself.”

Haters seem to be the first to denounce and reject anything that supports the poor and needy (Proverbs 14:31 “He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”)…

Demonize aliens, legal or otherwise, in this country who only wish to improve their lives and the lives of their families. (Exodus 22:21-27 “Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt… My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless) or…

Do they simply and routinely opposed, with vengeance, any bill introduced by those damned liberal-socialist communist-Democrats and their Muslim leader, Barack Hussein Obama.

Hate is now the coin of the right-wing extremist’s realm. A coin that is over used when discus… No they discuss nothing, yelling about taxes, Medicare and Medicaid, education (especially science education), marriage equality, a women’s right to choose, or any of the other multitudes of issues.

One learns in persuasion classes that once the opponent devolves to hateful language, anger, changing the subject, misleading statements, and a like, when they have nothing to say to support their position, the opponent has lost. The best response to this person is to give them all of the rope they need…

Here is my bottom line – Whether 89 Republicans signed an Amicus brief because they have come to their senses and believe that DOMA truly sucks, or if they are sacrificing themselves for the cause, it does not matter. They are supporting the elimination of DOMA.

If Haters cannot understand that their God made all men and women in His (or Their) image, including those of the LGBT community, they have been blinded to the truth by their own anger.

If the Haters do not cherish the Constitution enough to understand that today, “We the people” does not mean just straight and Christian.

If Haters do not cherish the Declaration enough to understand that today “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” really means ALL Men and Women, then that are not true Americans.

I am not angry at these Haters. I do not hate them. I do feel sorry that they have completely lost their knowledge of history, humanity and honor by not seeing that the world has changed and nothing they do can change that. Nothing.
